Anxiety Q & A

What should I do if I feel like I’m having a panic attack?

If you feel you’re experiencing some of the symptoms associated with a panic attack, such as sweating, chest pain or strong or irregular heartbeats, schedule an appointment with Dr. Medley. A panic attack can feel like you’re having a heart attack. If you feel your symptoms are serious, ask to see the doctor as soon as possible. When you visit Dr. Medley for the first time, she’ll ask you about your medical history and about any triggers that make you feel anxious. Of course, if you’re suffering from severe chest pains during a panic attack, or you’re having trouble breathing, you may be in a life-threatening situation and should call 911 immediately.

Can medication help with anxiety?

Like any medical condition, Dr. Medley first assesses your medical history and makes a diagnosis. There are several types of anxiety patients can suffer from, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, panic disorder or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), so it’s important to identify the cause of your symptoms before discussing drug therapy.

Dr. Medley is an internist, but she also encourages patients to consider integrative care that combines conventional treatment with alternative holistic remedies, so you have some options. The type of treatment you will receive largely depends on the type of disorder and symptoms you’re experiencing.

More importantly, she has experience helping patients overcome their fears and live happy, anxiety-free lives.
